but not all new S mintmarked kennedys are silver--

how to recognize the diff? attach pics if you can, thanks

I think they are still minting Kennedy halves at all three mints. The P and D are business strikes in CuNi clad. From 2002 on they have only been produced for mint sets. The S versions are proof coins and come in 90% silver (same as 1964) and CuNi Clad.

You can tell the difference by an edge check.

You are both exactly correct. An edge with copper is obviously CuNi clad and an edge with no copper is a silver proof. There is also a mass difference. The silver masses slightly more. I also see a lot of people insisting the new silver Kennedys are 40% silver, but that is incorrect. They are 90% (as are the dimes and quarters from the silver proof sets).

Here's a pic of a 2000s silver proof I found, sorry I didn't take a good edge shot but the others are right- all silver baby. BTW got mine for 50 cents LOL. HH Mark
